When Porsche announced that it was set to launch its first all-electric vehicle, it was always going to be special – the Porsche Taycan has exceeded all expectations. It’s a revolutionary machine that proves a plug in car can be just as fun as it is environmentally friendly.
Hitting the market eight years after the launch of the Tesla Model S – when sustainability had climbed to the top of the global agenda – the Taycan has been described as a ‘genuine game-changer’. Making its debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, the four-door saloon has the look of a coupé and is built on the new battery-electric platform set to be used to underpin a number of all-electric cars currently in development, including the Audi e-Tron GT.
The Taycan is roughly the same size as the Porsche Panamera, yet feels as agile and playful as a Porsche 911, with the performance to rival any supercar at any price. On the subject of price, the Taycan is certainly an investment but comes on the back of a €6bn investment from Porsche into on electromobility.
The entry-level 4S costs £83,500, the Taycan Turbo costs £116,000, while the flagship Turbo S commands a price tag of £139,000. And, with a range of tempting optional extras to choose from, few Taycan models will leave the showroom with a price south of £100,000.
In terms of performance, the entry-level 4S is as remarkable as its more powerful Turbo and Turbo S stablemates, especially if you opt for the 93.4kWh battery from the more expensive models.
The Taycan 4S has the largest battery and offers the most range, with a whopping 288 miles on offer. In lower winter temperatures, a range of around 220 miles between charges is more likely but this remains impressive given the performance and weight of the car.
Taking to the road, the Taycan is a brilliant drive, disguising its bulk remarkably well and tackling corners like a 911, yet feeling as refined and comfortable as a Panamera over long distances. Owners are also treated to one of the most tech-laden and impressive interiors on the market.
Put simply, this is one of the best four- door sport coupés you can buy – a remarkable car.
